Know about the high security registration plate (HSRP) in India

 What is HSRP?

High security number plates are made out of aluminum and are managed to secure to the vehicle with at least two non-reusable snap-on locks. On the top left corner of the plate is a hot-stamped chromium-based 20 mm X 20 mm hologram of Ashoka Chakra in blue. On the bottom left corner of this plate, a 10-digit permanent identification number (PIN) is laser branded.

The numerals and alphabets on the HSRP also have a hot-stamped film with the word 'INDIA' inscribed at a 45-degree angle. This plate is also electronically linked to the vehicle on which it is mounted.

Unlike the number plates before 2019, the registration plates are not easy to tamper with and change easily.

Benefits of High security registration plate (HSRP):

  1. Cannot be easily tampered with or removed or changed easily.

The primary reason for this mandate is that old number plates are very easy to tamper with and can be easily removed or switched. A stolen vehicle always has a replaced registration plate, making it difficult for authorities to track it down, but the HSRPs have a non-removable snap-on lock that is difficult to replace.

2. Authorities can track the vehicle easily with the help of HSRP

The HSRPs are also advantageous because important vehicle information such as the engine number and chassis number are stored in a centralized database. The stored data, combined with the 10-digit PIN, is important for identifying a stolen vehicle.

3. High security registration plates comes with unified design, font, colors and styles

The authorities have also addressed the issue of incomprehensible registration plates, which occur when owners use various fonts and other additions that make it difficult for traffic officers to read the plates. The HSRPs have a consistent pattern, which eliminates the entire problem.

4. Only state authority approved private vendors can fix these plates to the vehicles.

Automobile dealerships and state-authorized private vendors set the HSRPs. The HSRPs are only issued after the vehicle owner provides vital information such as the engine number and chassis number. This procedure is extremely useful in preventing registration plate forgery.

The procedure for obtaining your car's HSRP will differ depending on the state in which it was registered. To obtain a list of car dealerships that are certified to repair the HSRP and color-coded stickers, contact the state transportation department (RTO)

How to apply for HSRP?

To apply for HSRP you can visit the local RTO office. You can also visit the state transport website of your state to get the list of car dealerships that are certified to fix the HSRP and color-coded stickers. Moreover, if you belong to Delhi, Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, you can apply for the HSRP through www.bookmyhsrp.com portal. This website will require you to enter some details such as vehicle number, chassis number, engine number, address, contact number, fuel type, etc. After entering the details, you can book an appointment with your nearest authorized dealership. Then on the appointment date, you will have to visit the dealership to get it installed.

Before July 2022, all vehicles, including two-wheelers, must be equipped with a HSRP. Vehicle number plates sold after April 2019 already have HSRP, so those who purchased or registered their vehicles before April 2019 must obtain HSRP as soon as possible.

The central government has not set a price for HSRP, so the cost may vary by state. The HSRP ranges from around Rs 400 for two-wheelers to Rs 1,100 for four-wheelers, depending on the category. For vehicles with a HSRP, the color-coded stickers can be installed for Rs 100.

Conclusion:

There are some arguments happening on High security registration plate implementations across india. Because the HSRP is mandatory, all vehicle owners have about a year to install their new license plates. We recommend getting it sooner rather than later to avoid the last-minute rush.
